Aloha & Arrivederci

Aloha! To say it’s “been a while” would be an understatement. It’s been a lonnnnng while since I’ve written a post on Artistry By Adele. I started this blog as a way to escape my day-to-day and have a creative outlet I could look forward to. I was working in a job that wasn’t a right fit for me, I was living in the suburbs in a city I grew up in and desperately needed a break from, and this blog gave me a place I could explore my thoughts and future plans.

Fast forward FOUR whole years and life is quite different. My husband and I quit our jobs, sold our house, got rid of most of our belongings, and left our comfortable lives for a new adventure in Hawaii. Since moving we started a business, met new people, tried new things, explored our island, and have traveled to new and exciting places.

Sometimes life is hard this far away from friends and family. We miss out on major family events and all the little things we’d love to be around for…like our nieces and nephews growing up in the blink of an eye. We miss graduations and sometimes weddings or other functions we would love to attend. But all in all, this was the best decision we ever made. We’ve had more fun and excitement in these years than I could have imagined. We’ve met amazing people who have changed our lives in this short time and I really believe that we’ve changed lives with the women’s fitness/lifestyle program we started on Oahu. We will always wish we could be near the people who mean the most to us, but living a life you aren’t happy in is never the answer if you have the chance to change it. No matter if we stay here forever, or if we move back to the mainland at some point, I believe I’ll look back on these times as some of the happiest of my life. If you told me four years ago that I would be living on an island, doing headstands on a paddle board in the ocean for fun, I definitely wouldn’t have believed you.

Since my last blog post all that time ago, I’ve often thought about coming back to this community. I’ve thought about what I would blog about….fitness (my professional life), nutrition and vegetarian cooking (one of my passions since I cut meat and dairy out of my life when we moved here) or just about life in Hawaii. I guess I was so consumed with enjoying my life here that I never found (or took) the time to sit down and write about it.

But here I am, all this time later, missing my blog, missing the community and really missing photography. I’m still loving life on this beautiful island, but my passion for travel and photography was re-sparked with a few major trips we’ve taken since our move. Last year we visited New York twice, we spent a month traveling around Europe in Italy, Norway, Spain & Iceland and this summer, we’re heading back there again! This time with a week on the Greek Islands and a week in Sardinia, Italy. While researching our trip, and looking back at my old photos, I realized I NEED TO START BLOGGING AGAIN!

So here goes nothing! I’ve created a new blog, Aloha and Arrivederci where I plan to share my travel stories and photos, as well as the best moments of my life here on Oahu. If you’re interested, go check it out and follow for blog posts via email. You can also check out some of my favorite photos on my new travel instagram account, @alohaandarrivederci

M.I.A.

Six weeks. I’ve been MIA for six weeks. That is the longest I have gone without blogging since I started Artistry By Adele and I’m shocked I let it go that long. This blog has been my creative outlet and a major source of my enjoyment for such a long time that I’m surprised I let it get away from me. I always said, the day my blog feels like a chore is the day I’ll stop posting.

One day, I sat down in front of my computer and was just out of ideas. I felt like I ran out of things to write about and nothing that came to mind warranted an entire blog post. Do people REALLY want to hear about this recipe I made last night? It wasn’t even that good… Are these photos REALLY interesting enough to post on the internet? Is my writing ACTUALLY good enough to keep readers entertained? That was when blogging started to feel like a chore. I’ve been feeling that way for a while now (over six weeks to be specific) until this morning. This morning I thought, F#$% it. If people don’t want to read it, they won’t. And that’s fine with me. Each post doesn’t have to be the best blog post I’ve ever written. I started this blog to have fun and explore my creativity and interests, and that’s what I plan to do. I may not post as often as I used to (every day), but that’s okay too. It’s my blog after all. I can do what I want with it, right?

Most of my time over the last couple months has been spent helping some of my friends celebrate their marriages. Three of my closest friends, including my absolute best friend on the planet, got married this summer/fall and I was lucky enough to be a bridesmaid in two of the weddings and a Matron of Honor in one. My husband was also a groomsman in two of the three weddings so we were both pretty busy with bachelor/bachelorette parties, bridal showers, engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, and weddings.

All three weddings were photographed by the lovely Bre Thurston and you can see more of these photos on her website.

So once all the craziness subsided, I got bored. I was happy to have a break and get back to normal life, but when I got there, I went into a bit of a funk. So I figured, what better way to get out of my funk than to plan a spontaneous trip to New York to visit two of my good friends, especially since I’ve never been before. I was so excited for the trip, but then Sandy hit and I wasn’t able to go. Thankfully both friends are just fine, but I decided to put that trip off until the Spring and instead my hubby and I just booked a trip to visit family in Hawaii for Christmas AND I’m planning a girls’ trip to Vegas in January. Vegas fixes everything.

I also turned 27 on Tuesday. For some reason, I wasn’t very excited about this birthday. 27 is just such a strange number. To celebrate, a couple of my girlfriends and I did the fleet feet neon fun run where we got to wear these awesome hot pink, light up vests. My best friend won a pair of new running shoes in the raffle, and we ended our run at a nearby bar and had a couple of beers to celebrate. Not a bad way to start a new year of my life. The vests definitely helped.

In other news, I re-joined the world on Twitter. I am still figuring out how to use it properly, hashtags and all, but I think I love it. My tweets are private, but if you’d like to follow me I’d be glad to accept!

Plan on seeing a lot more of me from now on. I miss all my blogging buddies! Happy Friday!

Gliding

So I have been MIA for quite a while now and I really have no excuse. I’ve been busy having fun and have been out-of-town almost every weekend and I let my blogging dwindle.

BUT, I’m back and ready to get back to it :) I miss my blog and I miss all the WordPress peeps. Today’s blog post is short and sweet. I am checking off one of the items on my bucket list today- “Become a wakeboarding rockstar.” Okay, so I’m not quite a “rockstar” or a pro by any means, but I am getting much better than I ever thought I’d be. When I started wakeboarding I was horrible and couldn’t even get up on the water. Now I get up easily and am getting comfortable enough to jump the wake. For me, that’s a HUGE accomplishment. As one of the least coordinated and athletic people I know, jumping the wake on a wakeboard is kind of a big deal.

This is definitely my new favorite hobby. There is just something about gliding through the water and spending the day on a boat that puts a smile on my face.

Now if only I could be as good as my husband ;) Someday?

How WordPress Saved my Life

Okay, so the title may have been a LITTLE bit of an overstatement… but read on to see what I’m talking about.

I was nominated for the Kreativ Blogger Award yesterday and it really made me smile. I was nominated for a similar thing,  the Versatile Blogger Award, a while back and I found it to be a fun way for bloggers to connect, find new interesting blogs, and write a little about  themselves. This one made me especially happy because it was all about being creative and it told me that someone else out there (who I didn’t already know) thought I was creative too. I liked that.

I’ve loved creative projects since I was a kid and grew up thinking of myself as a creative person. There have been times in my life where I completely lost touch with that side of myself and didn’t spend time doing the creative things I used to enjoy. There was a period (after high school when I took a little time off before college) when I was pretty down. I wasn’t in school, was working full-time and felt like I didn’t have much drive or purpose in my daily life. That sounds dramatic, but I was going to work every day for 8 hours, coming home, eating dinner, watching TV, going to sleep and doing it all over again. Life was boring and I felt lost (and I was only 19!).

Around that time my mom and I had a talk about how I was feeling. Her advice to me was to do something creative. She said I should find a project that interested me and do it. She thought it might help me get excited about something and in turn, improve whatever negative feelings I was having. I remember it specifically because I started a sort of strange project after that… I started making wood purses. Yep, you read that right. Wood purses… totally practical, right? I bought them at Michael’s (they were more like wooden boxes, but I wanted them to be purses) and I decoupaged them with photos of pin up women from the 50’s. I know this sounds way weird in writing, but they actually looked pretty cool hanging in my teenage room at the time. I got so into these purses and had so much fun  that I made at least 10 of them and was even thinking about selling them for a while. That never worked out… I wonder why not? Who wouldn’t want to buy a purse made of hard wood?

Anyway, the point is I lost touch with my creative side and when I started doing these projects again my life improved. Friends have made fun of me during some of the different creative phases I’ve gone through (scrapbooking for instance – I took a lot of flack for that in college!) but it has always made me happy. Now I have my blog and I couldn’t love it more. Of course I have good days and bad days. Some days I have nothing to post about and some days I could post 10 times if I wouldn’t end up looking like a crazy person. Blogging has made me creative all over again. It is a reminder that I need to continue being an “artist” and I need to keep creating to keep my readers interested. But really, it helps me immensely just to get the posts down on “paper” regardless of whether or not people read them (although I can’t lie…watching my stats go up doesn’t hurt!).

I can honestly say WordPress and the blogging community has made me a happier person. It keeps me thinking about the next creative topic I can blog about, whether it’s a new recipe, my photography, my latest DIY project, makeup artistry, whatever. And I am constantly inspired by the other amazing blogs out there.

So, I want to thank conchsaladesque for recognizing my creativity.

There are seven rules to accepting the Kreativ Blogger award –

  1. You must thank the person who has given you the award.
  2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
  3. Link the person who has nominated you for the award.
  4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting.
  5. Nominate 7 other Kreativ Bloggers.
  6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.
  7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs to let them know they have been nominated.

7 things about myself people may (or may not) find interesting-

  • I can wiggle my ears. My grandpa taught me when I was a little one and it’s one of my favorite memories with him.
  • I was born in Denver but I haven’t been back since I was three.
  • I LOVE tomatoes. I grew up hating them with a passion and now I put them on everything and would eat fresh tomatoes from the garden all day long if I could.
  • I HATE mustard. I don’t believe that will ever change. I’ve tried and tried and I just cannot make myself like it.
  • Sushi is my favorite food on the planet. I’d eat it everyday if I wouldn’t die from Mercury poisoning (and could afford it).
  • I hate listening to people chew their food. I know this is silly but it can actually change my mood if I am in a situation where I have to listen to another person’s weird mouth sounds as they consume their meal. gross.
  • I used to love butter as a kid. Like…eat it straight on crackers (or without crackers) kind of love. I vaguely remember sneaking it out of the fridge when I was around 5 years old. It makes me cringe thinking about it now.

7 Kreativ Bloggers – All creative in their own ways.

In My Queue

If you read my 2012 post you saw that I want to read more in the next year. I said I wanted to start with 15 but I know I can do much more than that. Especially since I already have a list of books I want to read next. Here are some that are in my “queue” so far (in no particular order).

Steve Jobs Biography by Walter Isaacson

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (I liked the movie but heard the book was better).

Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy by Caroline Kennedy

Miss Peregrines home For Peculiar Children by Random Riggs (Almost finished with this book now)

What it Takes: The Way to the White House by Richard Ben Cramer

The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

So what am I missing? What are some great books you’ve read recently that I just can’t live without? I’d love it if you sent them my way!

A Little Instagram Love

So I happen to be in love with the app Instagram. If you don’t use it, you should. It is a social networking site specifically for sharing your life in photos. You follow people, they follow you (just like twitter or Facebook) but all you post are photos. The app also has cool ways of making your photos look more interesting- borders, color effects, etc.  Because I love it so much, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite Instagram photos from the past year in case you haven’t seen them!

My latest visit to SF

Favorite food on the planet

Best Coffee in Sacramento

Champagne flowing for New Years

My new toy- The Gorilla Pod!

Food Truck Heaven- Mini Burger Truck

First night of Hanukkah

My candy cane is better than your candy cane.

Beautiful view on Christmas Day

Pretending I love football for my husband (only when the Saints play)

Wedding dress shopping for my bff

Last but not least, The birthday breakfast I made for my hubby on Monday :)

Happy Instagram-ing!

2012

This year I decided to make a resolution list of things I think I can realistically obtain. Most of them are pretty small, but I figure if I write them down it will help me make sure to complete them. So here goes (in no particular order)

– Read at least 15 books..I know this may sound like a small number to some people (in particular both of my parents who could read 15 books in a month if they tried..) but this is a reasonable goal for me. I would say I usually read about 6-10 a year, depending on the year. Between working full-time, training for a half marathon (possibly a full after that), family obligations, and any other excuse I can think of right now, I have trouble reading as much as I’d like to. So this year, I’d like to watch less TV and read more. Simple enough, right?

– Run at least 600 miles- If I run 50 miles a month this will be no problem. When I get closer to my first half I know I’ll be running much more than 50 in  a month but I am also accounting for any “time off” I know I will take.

– Blog at least twice a week, EVERY week – I’d love to make this goal to blog every day, but that isn’t realistic for me. Some weeks I have plenty of time and plenty of ideas of what to blog about and others I’m too busy or too creatively blocked to post about anything. Yes, I could post just to post on those days, but who wants to read that? I figure two good posts a week are better than 7 crappy ones, right?

– Learn more about photography- I have learned so much about photography and my camera in the last year and I want to learn even more this year.

– Upgrade my camera – Hopefully within the next year it will be worth my while to sell my camera and upgrade for a more professional version to turn a hobby into a possible side job.

– Cross off a few items from the bucket list – any items will do! I just want to do a few each year. :)

Happy New Year everyone!

Versatile Blogger Award

The Rules of the Versatile Blogger Award:

1.  Thank the person(s) who shared the award with you by linking back to them in your post.

2.  Pass this award to 15 recently discovered blogs and let them know that you included them in your blog post.

3.  List 7 things about yourself.

Thank you to Marie Nagle Photography for nominating me for this award! Before your comment I didn’t even know this existed! So thanks, and thanks for reading :)

I’m working a little out-of-order here..

7 things about myself:

1- I LOVE blogging. I am new to the blogging world and now wonder where it has been all my life. I have had more fun in the last few months blogging than thought I ever would! So, thank you WordPress!

2- I work in full time in PR but sometimes do makeup on the weekends because I started to miss the creativity and fun of being a makeup artist.

3- I live in Northern California with my husband and two kitties. We are constantly working on our house since it’s our first home we have owned.

4- If I could do anything in the world it would be travel (and blog about it of course). New dream job = travel blogger/photographer. How cool would that be?

5- I love to cook, but I hate doing the dishes (and if you remember from Triumphs of a Terrible Baker, I cannot bake but sometimes  I wish I could).

6- Versatile is exactly what/who I am! I blog about cooking, makeup artistry, travel, running (I’m training for a half marathon), photography, DIY crafts, and I’m sure the list will keep growing! Next might be Do It Yourself projects around the house!

7- I graduated from California State University, Chico and majored in Communications with a minor in Political Science. I met some of my best friends there and sometimes wish I could go back to simpler times when all I had to focus on was class and fun! Grad school may be in the future, but not just yet.
